» About Us
In May 1976, John and Sherry Coffman started Coffman’s Workwear in a remodeled house at 3504 Dixie Highway. Their product line consisted of Carhartt, Wolverine, Dickie, and Levi.
As the business grew, so did the necessity for more retail space. After working on the Alaskan pipeline in 1978, John decided to move the retail store to Southland Terrace Shopping Center under the name of Coffman’s Work, Hunting, and Western Wear. During this ten year period, the Coffmans were introduced to another addition to the business. After their son Jeff’s first touchdown pass in grade school football, came the birth of Coffman’s Sporting Goods. With the addition of this new product line, they realized instantly that another facility was in order to house their new direction.
In 1988, they moved from a small retail space to their new location at 4951 Manslick Road, Louisville, KY. Although work clothing was still a major part of their business, sporting goods lead them into a new venture – computerized embroidery.
Operating almost 100 sewing heads, Coffman's is able to offer a wider variety of embroidery services. Their TV commercials boast “This is the Place” and “Why go anywhere else” and they have always tried to build their reputation on that, with the two principles in mind:
1. Treat the customer like you want to be treated
2. Keep your business in Louisville
As their son, Jeff, moves toward becoming the operations manager and along with their 5 grandchildren, John and Sherry are wondering where the next generation will take the business. Stay tuned! Thank you for visiting this web site and remember "This is the Place"
